from margiela’s 1997 exhibit of clothes treated with various molds and/or mildews at the museum boijmans van beuningen

the first solo exhibition by maison martin margiela. each of the eighteen outfits (representing margiela’s previous collections) were treated with different strains of bacteria, yeast and mold, all isolated from the air and nurtured to provide varying colors and textures. over the first five days of the exhibition these organisms develop on the clothes and, once their gestation period is complete, change the color and aspect of the garments.
